A network for crisis centres in the Barents Region - a case for researching women's transregional mobilisation and agendasetting concerning gendered violence

NCM - Nordic Grant Scheme, 1999-2000, 2000-2001
NCM - NARP, Nordic Arctic Research Programme, 2001-2002
NCM - NorFA Gender and Violence Programme, 2001-2002

Project summary:
AIM
In most general terms, the research network aims to introduce new perspectives into the research on gender, citizenship, and democracy through a woman-friendly prism of double democratisation, interrelatedness of political and social developments and problematisation of the public/private division, which are important for women's sexual-reproductive rights and problems and issues related to violence against women and trafficking in women.

In the context of multilevel political orders - in one of the European East-West transregions, the Barents region - the network will also place on the agendas issues concerning a new type of democratic formations seen through democratisation from below, in a civil society. Issues concerning the social dimension of the Barents administration will also be discussed by exploring the prospects for cross-border welfare services for women and for promoting transversal dialogues between the Nordic and Russian scholars.

The network will create "added Nordic value" by scrutinising differences between the Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish), Finnish, and Russian models of crisis centres and their daily practices - in giving short-term immediate help to victims of violence, and in doing long-term transformative work in order to increase public awareness of gendered violence, and to make demands for legislative reforms and more efficient policies. Also, it will shed light on problems related to turbulent transition in NW.Russia, that is affecting the lives of women on both sides of the Nordic-Russian borders through deterioration of women's position in Russia, and consequent transborder sex tourism, prostitution and trafficking, and bipolar constructions of images of Nordic vs. Russian women. Nordic and Western vs. Russian traditions in women's and gender studies are on the main agenda, too.

The research network is closely related to the Nordic-NW.Russian NCRB - A Network for Crisis Centres in the Russian Barents Region (and in the Barents region as a whole) development project, 1999-2001, with 18 units in NW.Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway.
