Global Change

Global Change in the North

The Global Change programme looks at how predicted environmental changes in northern areas are reflected in nature and in man’s operational prerequisites. The programme also looks for ways of curbing the changes and adapting to them. The programme brings together special expertise in the field of physical-biological research of natural systems and socio-economic study of global change.

The areas of study are: (1)global change forcing factors, (2) dynamics of environmental and climate change and climate history, (3) the effects of climate change on terrestial ecosystems and restoration, (4) the socio-economic effects of environmental change, (5) technological solutions to prevent or mitigate global change.

The research emphasises the importance of international cooperation and research networking. The results are published in high-quality international journals. The projects are strongly integrated with other research programmes of Thule Institute, and the aim of the operation is to meet the criteria of a Centre of Excellence.
