Research Professor Arja Rautio, programme director, `Circumpolar Health and Wellbeing`
Arja Rautio, MD, PhD is a medical doctor and a docent in pharmacology and toxicology and is also a registered toxicologist (EUROTOX). Rautio made her doctoral thesis on drug metabolizing ability of cirrhotic patients in1985 in the University of Oulu. Dr. Rautio has worked in different teaching tasks at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Oulu and as a private doctor in the field of occupational health care (Occupational Health Clinic of Nokia company, Oulu, 1987-2003).
She has been a board member of the University of Oulu (1994-2002). On national level, she has influenced the development and assessment of national educational work as a member of the committee for selecting Centres of excellence and for planning and implementation of graduate schooling. She is working as a rector in scientific affairs of Summer University of Central Ostrobothnia (2001- ). She acts as a deputy member in the Medical Board and as a permanent advisor in the Finnish National Agency for Medicines. She is also the leader of the thematic network of Arctic Medicine in the University of Arctic.
Her recent research studies have been directed towards special issues of clinical toxicology (air pollution and respiratory health and modelling behaviour of pharmaceuticals and chemicals in the human body), environmental health (xenobiotic metabolism in different species and effect of environment to human health) and modelling holistic health. She has published over 70 pre-reviewed original articles and review articles altogether. She also has publications related to basic degree teaching and to graduate training.
